2017 proved to be an exceptional period for the gaming industry, with a plethora of outstanding titles that stood out from the typical big-budget shooters and open-world adventures. Surprisingly, many of these remarkable experiences emerged from small, independent game developers.
In addition to other considerations, we examined titles that provided distinctive experiences and recounted captivating narratives. This compilation showcases a collection of games that challenge the limits of the medium in various ways. Below are the games we devised and listed in no particular order.

1: Cuphead
Cuphead, an action game with a classic run and gun style, places a strong emphasis on battling bosses. The game draws inspiration from 1930s cartoons and meticulously recreates the visuals and audio using traditional techniques from that era. These include hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and authentic jazz recordings.
2: SteamWorld Dig 2
Embark on an exciting journey of platform mining in SteamWorld Dig 2, a game inspired by the Metroidvania genre. In this captivating adventure, a trading town is plagued by unexplained earthquakes. It falls upon a solitary steambot and her unexpected partner to delve into the depths and reveal the hidden horrors lurking beneath. Unearth valuable treasures, discover well-hidden secrets, and navigate through treacherous obstacles as you dig your way through vibrant underground realms.
3: NIGHT IN THE WOODS
NIGHT IN THE WOODS is a captivating adventure game that centers around the exploration of a rich and vivid world, filled with an array of fascinating characters to interact with and numerous engaging activities to partake in. The game places great emphasis on its immersive storyline and well-developed characters, providing players with a truly enthralling experience.
4: Golf Story
Golf Story is a golf-themed adventure game that incorporates elements of role-playing. Embark on an engaging narrative featuring a varied ensemble of individuals. Enhance your golfer’s abilities by conquering tasks, unraveling enigmas, and acquiring fresh gear.
5: What Remains of Edith Finch
What Remains of Edith Finch presents an assortment of unconventional narratives centered around a Washington state family. Playing as Edith, players will embark on a journey through the immense Finch residence, unearthing tales that shed light on her family’s past and unraveling the mystery behind her being the sole survivor.
6: Rain World
As a wanderer slugcat, you embody both the hunter and the hunted in a disrupted ecosystem. Equip yourself with a spear as you venture into the desolate industrial wasteland, foraging for enough sustenance to endure. However, exercise caution as larger creatures also share this goal… and they find slugcats irresistibly appetizing.
7: Divinity: Original Sin 2
The Divine has perished. The Void is drawing near. And the dormant powers within you are about to come alive. The fight for Divinity has commenced. Make careful choices and be cautious of trust; darkness resides in every heart. Assemble your group and become skilled in intricate, strategic battles. Embark on a journey with a party of up to four people – but remember, only one among you will have the opportunity to ascend as a God.
8: Hollow Knight
Experience an extraordinary action-filled adventure across a sprawling kingdom inhabited by insects and heroes. Navigate through intricate tunnels, combat corrupted creatures, and form connections with peculiar bugs, all presented in a timeless, hand-drawn 2D aesthetic.
9: Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Immersed in the era of Vikings, a Celtic warrior who is emotionally shattered embarks on a profound and eerie journey through the depths of Viking Hell. Her mission: to battle for the salvation of her deceased beloved. Developed with input from both neuroscientists and individuals who have lived through psychosis, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will transport you into the innermost recesses of Senua’s psyche.
