Gameplay

In the game, the protagonist known as “the Kid” navigates through dreamlike environments that take shape as the player approaches the edges. These environments are viewed isometrically and are populated by a variety of enemy types that pose a threat to the Kid. To defend against these enemies, the player can choose two weapons from a selection available at specific locations called arsenals. The Kid also has access to a special attack, but both weapons and special attacks must be acquired before they can be used. To use special attacks, the player must collect “black tonics” that are scattered throughout the levels or dropped by enemies. There is a limit to the number of times a special attack can be used, with the maximum being three times per tonic. However, this limit can be increased by visiting the Distillery. The Kid’s health is indicated by a health bar, which can be replenished using “health tonics”.

Story

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world after a disastrous event called the Calamity. The city of Caelondia and its surrounding regions have been shattered into many floating pieces, causing ecological chaos and turning most of the inhabitants to ash. The player takes on the role of the Kid, a protagonist who wakes up on one of the few remaining fragments of the old world and embarks on a journey to the Bastion, a place of refuge during troubled times. The only other survivor he meets there is Rucks, an elderly man who serves as the game’s narrator. Rucks instructs the Kid to gather the Cores that once powered Caelondia. These Cores are used by a device in the Bastion to create landmasses and structures, and to propel the Kid through the air using “skyways” to travel further afield.

How long is Bastion?

Reception

Bastion received positive reviews from critics and was well-received by consumers, resulting in high sales. The game received a lot of praise for its presentation, specifically the narration. The game’s graphics, music, and story were so impressive that it could be marketed based on presentation alone.

According to the creative director of Bastion, Greg Kasavin, the game sold over 500,000 copies in 2011, with 200,000 of those sales being for the Xbox Live Arcade. At the PAX East gaming convention in March 2013, Kasavin revealed that Bastion had sold more than 1.7 million copies across all platforms. No information has been excluded in this paraphrased text.
