Gameplay
Unpacking is structured into different stages that correspond to specific years: 1997, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2018. In each stage of the game, players are required to unpack various items belonging to a female character and place them in her new living space, which symbolizes important life events. By organizing these items in the living area, players are able to learn more about the protagonist’s life story and the places she has lived. The game consists of a total of eight stages, which feature 35 different rooms.
Story
Unpacking tells the story of a woman’s life journey through different stages by having players unpack her belongings in each new home. Over time, more items are added to the unpacking process while some items are left behind, creating a narrative around personal objects and life experiences. The game’s storytelling is cleverly crafted, leaving players with a touching story about the impact of love on life and the importance of creating a home.
