Gameplay

The protagonist of the game, Yarny, is an apple-sized creature created from red yarn. Players explore the world around Yarny, which looks much larger due to its small size. Yarny utilizes the yarn from its body to create rope bridges, pull items, and swing. This yarn is the main medium used to solve puzzles. As Yarny moves, the twine unravels, leaving a trail that the player can use to solve puzzles. At the same time, this presents a challenge as too much walking will result in Yarny becoming too thin to move further. This can be remedied by interacting with red yarn balls found in the game environment.

Story

At the beginning of the game, an old woman is visible looking out a window. She then adjusts a baby picture and grasps a ball of yarn. As she ascends the stairs, a single ball of yarn emerges from the scene. Yarny, the protagonist of the game, walks into the scene and is astounded by the environment. By viewing various frames in the home, Yarny can uncover memories of places that were significant to the inhabitants. The first memories are joyous moments, such as visiting the beach or walking in the mountains. Eventually, gloomier memories arise: the natural forest is industrialized, leading to accidental contamination with hazardous waste, and people begin to relocate to the city. A memory also discloses that the elderly woman’s husband passed away from a heart attack.

How long is Unravel?

When it comes to the main goals, Unravel typically takes about 6 hours to complete. However, if you’re a dedicated gamer who wants to explore every aspect of the game, it may take around 13.5 hours to achieve 100% completion.

Reception

Unravel was well-received by critics who praised the visuals, protagonist, soundtrack, and general atmosphere. However, a few critiques were made regarding the command system, range of puzzles, and platforming. A follow-up to the game, titled Unravel Two, was released in June of 2018.
